The Town Map

Richmond's Most Popular Publication

The Town Map

Richmond's official town map has quite a history behind it - and it's still evolving. It began life as a joint publication from the Green Howards Museum, the Georgian Theatre Royal, The Station, Richmond Castle and Richmondshire Museum. When that partnership came to an end in 2023 and stocks finally ran dry, Richmond Information Centre stepped in, reprinting the map and donating copies back to the original partners as well as distributing it itself.

As stock of that 'first reprint' began to run dry, RIC went a step further and created a brand new edition under its own imprint. Demand has shown no sign of slowing - in September 2025, RIC printed a record 14,000 copies. Design costs were met by RIC itself, with print costs covered through paid advertising from the map's original partners.

Now titled Richmond Historic Centre and Town Trail, the map reflects two themes set to become ever more prominent in years to come. The Town Trail featured on it now matches the version found in the Civic Society's own publications and in RIC's Richmond Walks booklet - meaning it can, at last, be called definitive.

The Town Map is now RIC's most popular publication of all, distributed free of charge by RIC and other outlets across town. Informing visitors and supporting local businesses in equal measure, it's a fine example of RIC's ongoing commitment to public-benefit publishing.
